On top of all the other resolutions, I thought it would be a good idea to throw in one more approach to 2017. I've noticed a trend of people picking their word of the year. It would be the thought that gets them centered, keeps them focused, gives them the motivation when they just aren't feeling ready to face the tasks of the day. I ignored this idea for quite a while. I told myself I didn't need one more thing to keep track of, but I also felt that I would not be able to select a word that would be powerful enough to do me any good. After all, it's a lot of pressure to put on one verbal talisman: keep my life in check and on track for a year, through every time I'm flagging, every time I'm stressed, every time I'm lost. Is there one word that would do all that for me?
As it turns out, there is:
As I'd muddled over my resolutions and goals, I'd realized I always felt the most lost when I hadn't been diligent in an area of my life. And I knew, going forward, that to keep up with everything I want to do over the course of the year and my life, I would need to be earnest in my efforts. And those efforts have to go beyond making lists and trying to check everything off of them. It has to involve internalizing the changes I'm trying to make while I keep all the other facets of my life still going strong. And what does it take to make all that happen? A whole heap of diligence.
I have to say that this word of the year business is actually pretty great. Every time I'm having a difficult moment or I'm feeling overwhelmed or tired, I recall the word and its implications and make it a point to reignite my efforts. Diligence will get me through many things!
Once I picked this word, I made a large note of it in my planner. It's nice to see the reminder as I look at the month of January. Being a very visual person, I also liked the idea of creating a little sign for myself. I wanted something I could post in a couple of strategic places. I also wanted it to be one I'd made using some of my improved Photoshop skills. The picture above is the result of that concept. Now, not only do I have a nice visual reminder of my word of the year, I have a reminder of what a bit of diligence has already done for me. What could be better than that?
Sharing! That's what!
I'm pretty sold on the word of the year idea and the positive vibes it's already given me. So much so, in fact, that I'd like to create a free printable sign for you with your word of the year. It will look exactly like the sign in this post, but will have your word instead. Interested? Sign up for my e-mail list this week (link at the top of the blog). When my newsletter goes out next Tuesday (1/24), I'll include a link and further instructions for how to get your own. If you've already signed up for my e-mail newsletter please know that not only will you also get this link, but you already have my gratitude and love!
I can't wait to see your word of the year!
