In 2014 I made a pact with myself that for the month of January I would only craft with items in my stash. The only purchase I allowed myself was adhesive. And I mean straight up glue or Xyron backing (no cheating with washi tape or something along those lines). I pursued this challenge for a couple of reasons. One, of course, was to save money. I wanted to focus on some very particular financial goals and I knew playing this game with myself of not giving in to one of my great downfalls (purchasing craft supplies) would help me achieve those goals. The other reason was I wanted to force myself to look at those supplies in a new light. If this is all I have to work with, I better start getting creative!
I just knew going into this that I would hate it. I LOVE buying craft supplies! I love noodling with new things and adding them to my arsenal. A trip to Michael's fills the creative bucket, so to speak! This was truly going to live up to the designation "challenge".
The shock came when I fell in love with it! I'm not saying resisting temptation for 31 days was easy, but it helped me achieve the goals I wanted, especially looking at things in a new light!
This year, I've decided to issue myself the challenge again. Saving money is great and that's definitely a reason to pursue this. I also want to attack this again because my craft supply collection is getting a little bloated. I want it to be more organized so having less will certainly help. This is also obviously great training for the zombie apocalypse since I figure that will probably close down craft stores for a few days. However, the biggest reason is I want to climb out of my comfort zone. I want to start looking at those supplies with fresh eyes again. Some items are sitting in there just because I have a project in mind, but I never seem to get around to it. This month can help set that straight. Some are remnants of projects past. Either I think I will make the project again or there is just so much left over I feel bad throwing it away. If it was enough to keep, by Jove, I better get with it and start using it!
I am excited and ready to do this! Are you? Let me know why you're joining in the comments and I'll add you to a special Just Stash January Blog Roll. If you're a fellow tweeter or Instagrammer, please throw in a #juststashjanuary so we can all find you all the time! That's not creepy at all!
